Picking your characters is the whole craft

The casting decision is not a technical step. It is the creative decision that determines what the dub sounds like.

The casting decision is not a technical step. It is the creative decision that determines what the dub sounds like. Most browser tools skip it entirely — they replace everything. RythmoClip makes it the first question you answer.

Why casting matters more than recording

You can fix a slightly off take in a second pass. You cannot fix a casting decision that gave the main antagonist the same energy as the comic relief. The wrong voice for a character breaks the scene regardless of mic quality.

In a professional dub, the casting director spends days matching voices to character archetypes, ranges, and emotional registers. In a fandub, you do that yourself — usually in a few minutes. Take those minutes seriously.

Characters you can skip

Not every character needs a new voice. Side characters with one line, crowd extras, and off-screen voices often work better left in the original. Replacing them with a voice that sounds nothing like the scene's sonic palette draws attention to the swap.

The default in RythmoClip is to leave everyone in the original mix. You only add a character to the cast if you are explicitly taking that role. That default is a creative prompt, not just a technical toggle.

Matching your range to the role

The rythmo band will tell you when the character speaks. Before you record, listen to the original voice a few times. Note the register — high, low, breathy, clipped. Note the pace. Note how the character uses silence.

You do not need to copy the original voice. You need to find your version of the role that fits in the same scene. That is the craft.

One character at a time

If you are working alone, take one character per session. Learn the role before you add a second. The performances will be more consistent, and you will finish the scene instead of recording two incomplete character arcs.
